Our ingredients are carefully selected to give you protection and comfort you can feel good about. Learn more about why we selected them.

__Major Ingredients in Tampax Pearl:__ Our purified cotton is a plant-based ingredient purified for usage. Rayon is a material derived from purified wood pulp and is processed into an absorbent cellulose fiber. Our purification process ensures Tampax tampons are made without elemental chlorine bleaching and do not add any perfumes to the tampon. Comfort is key, so our Tampax Pearl plastic applicators are made without BPA and designed to make insertion easy and smooth. The LeakGuard Braid helps stop leaks before they happen by channeling them back to the core.

The menstrual cycle is a mystery to a lot of people, but it shouldn’t be! Half of the earth’s population has a menstrual cycle and without it, the human species wouldn’t even exist! Obviously, it’s common, normal, and important, so shouldn’t women and everyone else understand it? We think so. Let’s break it down.

The purpose of the menstrual cycle (yes, there is a purpose for the monthly bleed) is to prepare the uterus for pregnancy. Under the influence of hormones, mostly estrogen and progesterone, the menstrual cycle is a series of changes that the uterus and other female reproductive organs go through about once a month.

If a pregnancy occurs, the menstrual cycle stops cycling. When there’s no pregnancy (which is most of the time), the menstrual cycle repeats itself over and over again from [puberty](/en-us/period-health/first-period-guide/) (starting anywhere from age 9-16) through menopause (which is when periods naturally stop usually somewhere around age 50).

Our PhD scientists and outside experts help us define a safe limit for each ingredient. Almost everything in the world has a safe and an unsafe level or limit - including things like water!  For example, the trace amount of metals that could be found in a tampon is very small – not unlike the low amounts found in the food and water you consume every day. 

Since these trace amounts can be found everywhere in the environment, regulatory bodies like the EPA set allowable limits for things like drinking water to drive exposure as low as reasonably possible.
